Bago pa man hinangaan ng mga Filipino ang husay ni Manny “Pacman" Paquiao sa boksing, alam nyo ba kung sinong Pinoy boxer ang tiningala sa buong mundo na dating tagalinis ng sapatos sa kanyang lalawigan.
Si Gabriel “Flash" Elorde, isinilang sa Bogo, Cebu noong 1935 ay nadiskubre habang naglilinis ng sapatos sa kanyang lalawigan noong ito ay tinedger pa lamang.
Hirap sa buhay ang pamilya ni Elorde kaya hindi nito tinapos ang pag-aaral sa elementarya upang kumita ng pera at makatulong sa kanyang magulang.
Sa edad na 16, sinasabing nahasa na ang husay ni Elorde sa boksing at napasabak na kaagad sa walong propesyunal na laban kung saan anim dito ay napatumba nya ang kalaban.
Nakuha ni Elorde ang titulo ng world super featherweight noong Marso 1960. Naidepensa nya ito ng 10 ulit hanggang 1967. Dahil dito, tinanghal siya bilang kampyon na pinakamatagal humawak ng world junior lightweight belt sa loob ng pitong taon.
Dahil sa sakit na kanser bunga ng kanyang hilig sa paninigarilyo, pumanaw si Elorde noong 1985 sa edad na 49.
Noong 1993, pinarangalan si Elorde bilang unang Asyano na iniluklok sa International Boxing Hall of Fame sa New York at sa prestihiyosong World Boxing Hall of Fame.

Man stabs teenager in Cebu to get free food in jail
MANILA, Philippines - Poverty prompted a Cebu City resident to stab a youth in an eatery over the weekend just so he could land in jail and enjoy free food served there, a radio report said Monday.
Radio dzBB’s Cebu affiliate reported that Lucio Acosta stabbed the youth, whose name was withheld, and did not resist arrest when accosted by village watchmen.
When watchmen asked him the reason for stabbing the victim, he said he wanted to get free food inside the New City Jail, where he was to be brought.
The report quoted Acosta as saying poverty forced him to resort to an unusual way to get food, as he already tried getting jobs but was rejected because of his asthma.
Acosta was to be formally charged and brought to the New City Jail on Monday, the report said.
